Sonnhild Kestler is a Swiss textile designer known for her intricate and captivating textiles. Born in Germany in 1963, she grew up in Zürich, Switzerland. Kestler’s work stands out for its manual printing techniques and limited series production.
Kestler’s unique approach involves block printing, where she meticulously arranges brightly colored shapes of paper into new designs for screen prints. Her products include scarves, foulards, woven wool, and cotton fabrics, as well as accessories. Inspired by folk art, Eastern European folklore, Asian art, traditional Indian textiles, and everyday culture, her designs emerge through a collage technique. She prints individual elements on paper, combines them in various ways, and then painstakingly transfers the images to fabric using screen printing.
Her one-woman textile manufacturing company, S.K. Hand-Druck, produces these limited series textiles. Kestler’s creations are primarily made in Switzerland, with scarves and foulards rouliert in Appenzell. The embroidery work is done in India, and the crochet lace comes from Turkey.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Sonnhild Kestler was awarded the Schweizer Grand Prix Design in 2010.
